STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Scholarship Application Form

We invite all interested students from Chilean and international universities, who are currently working on their undergraduate or graduate thesis projects in areas related to conference themes to participate in the Fifth International Conference on Mine Closure, to be held on 23-26 November 2010 in Viña del Mar, Chile.

MINE CLOSURE 2010 will provide an oustanding opportunity for mining professionals to share their experiences, discuss latest issues and attempt to answer the important questions on how to close mines in socio-economically and environmentally responsible ways. Student papers are called in the following areas:


• Designing and planning for closure.
• Progressive closure planning
• Closure costs and financing
• Proactive stakeholder engagement
• Long term water management
• Mine site reclamation and rehabilitation
• Control and monitoring
• Soil ecology
• Mine cluster, redeployment, redevelopment and decommissioning
• Mine legacies and relinquishment
• Legal and regulatory issues
• Mining heritage and tourism
• Recent closure case studies
• Community development
• Retrenchment

To be considered for a scholarship, candidates should send an extended abstract of their thesis in English, formatted as a word file, maximum 3 pages long, before Monday, 30 August 2010 to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it The abstract must follow the standards established for authors in the Author's Guide. Abstracts must contain full information on the authors (full names, addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses), university (department, full address, official website) and supervising professor (full name, contact telephone and email address). The Technical Committee will choose 10 papers to be considered for the poster sessions along with the presentations of other authors. Ten student authors will be awarded scholarships which will cover accommodation expenses, as well as the Conference fees. In case of multiple authors, only one scholarship will be awarded per thesis project.

ELIGIBILITY

You are eligible if:

•    You are a full time undergraduate (last year) or graduate (Master of PhD) student at a Chilean or foreign fully accredited university.
•    You are pursuing degree in the careers relevant to Mine Closure conferences themes: biology/botany, environmental/chemical/mining/civil engineering, hydrology, geology, hydrogeology, geomechanics.
•    You have at least an intermediate knowledge of the English language. In case you are selected for the scholarship, you must be able to present your project in English during the poster session.

SUBMISSION DOCUMENTS

Submission for the scholarship must include:
•    Extended abstract
•    Picture student ID issued by a university that clearly shows current student status. The scholarship is only available to full time students.
•    Cover letter outlining why you should be awarded this scholarship.
